Route 60/65 Interchange Reconstruction: Springfield (Greene County)
NIGHTTIME ROAD CLOSING: Both eastbound lanes of Route 60 will be closed during overnight hours Tuesday to allow contractor crews to install bridge girders for the new northbound Route 65-to-westbound Route 60 “flyover” ramp. The roadway will be closed between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. During the closing, eastbound Route 60 traffic will be detoured south on Route 65 to Evans Road, up and over the interchange, to northbound Route 65 to the eastbound Route 60 ramp.
Other short-term nighttime ramp and lane closings are possible during the week to allow crews to move equipment and complete bridge work.
Here’s a look at other work planned:
- The northbound Route 65-to-westbound Route 60 ramp will be closed at night to allow crews to haul in dirt to build up the end of the new northbound Route 65 bridge over Route 60.
- Trucks entering and leaving the southeast corner of the interchange delivering bridge girders.
- Building a new bridge for the northbound Route 65-to-westbound Route 60 “flyover” ramp over the railroad tracks along westbound Route 60.
- Installing a sewer line on the south side of Route 60 near the railroad tracks.
- Trucks entering and leaving work areas at the eastbound Route 60-to-northbound Route 65 and the northbound Route 65-to-westbound Route 60 cloverleaf ramps.
- Trucks entering and leaving northbound Route 65 north of Route 60. Crews are building up rock and dirt for the new eastbound Route 60-to-northbound Route 65 “flyover” ramp along northbound Route 65 north of Route 60.
- Building bridge columns and grading dirt for bridges in various locations.
- Grading dirt for the new westbound Route 60 ramp lane along westbound Route 60 west of Route 65.
- Building a retaining wall along westbound Route 60 west of Route 65.
TRAFFIC IMPACTS:
Traffic is shifted and the driving lanes are narrowed on northbound Route 65, on southbound Route 65, on westbound Route 60 west of Route 65 and on eastbound Route 60. Two driving lanes remain open in each direction on the roadways.
TRAIL IMPACTS:
- The James River Greenway Trail is closed south of Route 60 to Brunswick Avenue on the east side of Route 65. The trail will be closed indefinitely to allow crews to build the new flyover ramps and complete other bridge work on Route 60 east of Route 65.
- The Galloway Creek Greenway trail is CLOSED at Route 60 near the railroad tracks. Trail access at that point will be closed indefinitely.
The work is part of a project to build directional, "flyover" ramps to eliminate a tight conflict point on the existing northbound Route 65 bridge over Route 60, build new bridges over the railroad tracks on Route 60, replace the northbound Route 65 bridge over Route 60 and the westbound Route 60 bridge over Lake Springfield, widen the eastbound Route 60 bridge over Lake Springfield, rehabilitate the southbound Route 65 bridge over Route 60 and install new highway lighting.
