Railroads - General Information

The Missouri Department of Transportation's railroads unit is responsible for improving rail freight, passenger service and the railroad /highway grade crossing program in Missouri. Since railroad regulation is primarily a federal government function, the unit monitors federal activity and guards the state's economic interests in relation to bankruptcy and abandonment of railroad facilities. The unit also works with Amtrak to increase and improve rail passenger service in the state. The department funds two Kansas City-St. Louis passenger trains.

The railroad unit also provides assistance in all railroad matters affecting the state and is responsible for activities cited in Chapter 680 of the Revised Statutes of Missouri. The railroads unit has attempted to meet its goals and objectives through the preparation and implementation of a state rail plan. The railroad-highway grade crossing program administers federal funds to improve safety at railroad crossings by implementing grade separations and improving at-grade crossings.
