Route 136 - Brownville Bridge - The Missouri Department of Transportation, in cooperation with the Nebraska Department of Roads, has announced that work will begin on the Brownville Bridge on U.S. 136 connecting Atchison County, Missouri and Nemaha County, Nebraska.  The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act signed by President Obama earlier this year will be the source of revenue for the project.  The contractor's notice to proceed is Tuesday, September 1st, for bridge rehabilitation and bridge deck replacement.  The contract was awarded to Cramer & Associates, Inc. of Grimes, Iowa in the amount of $8,113,822.82.  The project will take two years to complete.  Improvements will include a new deck, new railing, repair of the sub-structure, and new paint.  As many as 12 weekend closures are anticipated, but MoDOT is working closely with the communities on both sides of the bridge to limit the impact on scheduled tourism events.  Beginning Tuesday, September 8th, the bridge will be narrowed to one lane with a width restriction of 8'6".  Temporary signals will be in place to direct motorists through the work zone.  Motorists may expect brief delays.   Message boards will also be in place on Interstate 29 to update drivers about the work zone, the width restrictions, and closures.  Motorists are reminded to use extreme caution when driving through work zones.

UPDATED BROWNVILLE BRIDGE INFORMATION:  The Missouri Department of Transportation, in cooperation with the Nebraska Department of Roads, has announced that the second weekend closure of the Route 136 bridge over the Missouri River at Brownville, Nebraska is scheduled to take place Friday, November 20th, 2009 (6:00 p.m.) through Monday, November 23rd, 2009 (6:30 a.m.), weather permitting.  Although the majority of work on the bridge allows one lane to remain open, periodic weekend closures are necessary to facilitate repair work of the substructure. The work planned for November 20th involves the removal and replacement of existing steel plates beneath the bridge girders for strengthening. No traffic can be allowed on the bridge during this procedure.
A similar closure took place the first weekend in November. The contractor was able to perform over half of the work on the bridge at that time and may complete the work early with this second closure, thus the bridge may open before Monday.
