Groundbreaking July 21 for Alternate Route 63 Project

MoDOT Hosting Booth at the NEMO Fair to Discuss the Project

MACON (July 13, 2009) - MoDOT will hold a groundbreaking ceremony on Tuesday, July 21 at 9:30 a.m. to celebrate a project to construct six-miles of Alternate Route 63 to the east of Kirksville.  The event will take place on the west edge of the NEMO Fairgrounds. The public is invited to attend.

The ceremony will consist of brief comments from state and local dignitaries, followed by the ceremonial groundbreaking.

Guest speakers include: Senator Wes Shoemyer; Representative Rebecca McClanahan; Mayor Martha Rowe; Nate Walker, Executive Director of the Northeast Missouri Regional Planning Commission and Harriett Beard for the Highway 63 Transportation Corporation.  David Gach, Chairman of the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission, and MoDOT Chief Engineer Kevin Keith will also participate.

Preceding the ceremony the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2508 and the Ladies Auxiliary will present the colors and lead the pledge of allegiance, followed by Rev. Mike McCormack of the First Presbyterian Church offering the invocation

The $17.5 million contract for the project was awarded last month to C.J. Moyna and Sons Construction, who will begin construction this year.

The entire Alternate Route 63 corridor is approximately 8.5 miles in length. The north six-miles was accelerated with funding received from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), about 18 months ahead of the original schedule. This project will be completed by August 2011, and the entire 8.5 miles will be opened to traffic by the end of 2011.

In case of inclement weather the ceremony will be held in the 4-H Annex Building located on the grounds.

MoDOT is also hosting a booth at the NEMO County Fair this week to discuss the project.  The booth is located in the Multipurpose Building and will be staffed with MoDOT personnel from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. each evening.  Informational brochures and a large display will give fairgoers the details of the project.
