The Route 13 “Gap” project will send traffic to the east of the City of Lexington, separating through and local traffic. This will reduce congestion on the existing Route 13, and assist economic development as part of a regional plan to improve transportation. The regional planning councils along the Route 13 corridor view this project as part of a regional goal to provide an improved highway between the northern Kansas City area and I-70. They see this improvement as part of a plan to bring increased traffic to the area as well as serve as a relief to other corridors serving the same area of the state.
Construction for the newly relocated Route 13 has begun. The project was awarded to Chester Bross Construction Co. out of Hannibal at a cost of $7,190,960.
Amendment 3, approved by Missouri voters in 2004, has helped accelerate the schedule for this project, which is scheduled for completion in fall of 2010. Although current funding limits the project to two lanes, sufficient right of way will be acquired for this section to permit expansion to four lanes, if warranted by future traffic conditions.
