The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act-supported rehabilitation of the Heart of America Bridge, which connects Downtown Kansas City with North Kansas
City via Route 9, will be reconfigured to provide a barrier-protected
multiuse
path for bicycles
and pedestrians, plus include signage for bicyclists to share the road with motorized vehicles. MoDOT will retrofit the 25-year old
bridge to accommodate bicycle and pedestrian use within
existing dimensions.
- $4,545,000 of the project is funded by ARRA funds. The balance of project being funded by other sources; total project costs are $7.1 million. The majority of funds will be used for bridge repair and retrofit.
- Currently the project is scheduled to be let Dec. 18. Construction to begin in early 2010.
